Obesity. A national health concern in the United States.

Now most people would tell you the way to combat obesity is to eat less, avoid many goodies (sweetened fizzy drinks and junk foods) and exercise.

Alternatively, you could find a way to stimulate the billions of probiotic bacteria living in your gut.

As it turns out, probiotics can help you bring your body fat and weight under control in a number of ways.

  • One kind of probiotic bacteria increases the fat content in feces, forcing fat out of your body. Not exactly a mealtime topic but that’s how it works.
  • Another kind of probiotic bacteria encourages the release of a hormone called GLP-1. This hormone increases the feeling of contenment, reducing your appetite (and thereby your fat intake).

And many more.

Don’t know which probiotic is the best at shedding those pesky pounds?

Don’t worry. I reviewed around 2 dozen popular probiotics and, based on objective criteria, selected the top 5 probiotics for weight loss.

At A Glance: The Best Probiotics For Weight Loss

01. Hyperbiotics PRO-15 Probiotics – 60 Daily Time Release Pearls Review

These wonderful easily consumed (reasonably small so you should have no difficulty swallowing) probiotic pearls from Hyperbiotics have a wide variety of benefits.

Even though it’s not aimed specifically at weight loss, the probiotic strains in it do a lot to reduce weight, reduce cholesterol and improve liver health.

Within days of starting to consume this probiotic you should start feeling a reduced appetite. If you have been feeling bloated that too should subside.

I feel on this probiotic you probably can achieve a reduction in obesity without any changes to your routine.

That doesn’t mean I am suggesting you don’t diet or exercise; I am simply saying you should achieve a baseline obesity reduction from the probiotic alone.

Along with bringing your appetite under control this probiotic should also give some relief from constipation, flatulence and related problems.

Directions

  • The normal dosage is a pearl a day.
  • However if you think you need an extra kick you may take 2-3 pearls a day initially. Gradually cut it down to a pearl a day within a fortnight.
  • If you feel fatigue when you start taking the probiotic you can try reducing the dosage to one every alternate day. If you still feel fatigue stop taking it.

What I Liked

You should experience a drop in weight within days of taking this probiotic.

I think you should get a baseline weight loss – that is some weight loss only from the probiotic and without adopting any other measure like exercise or dieting.

Reasonably small pearl should be swallowed easily.

You should get relief from other problems like constipation, bloating as well.

Your skin should start clearing up and breakouts should cease.

What I Didn’t Like

Initially you may experience some issues like bloating and loose motion.

Some users may experience fatigue.

The weight loss varies from user to user. Some users may not experience any weight loss at all.

02. Hydroxycut Platinum, Weight Loss Supplement, Active Probiotics Review

The powerbase of this weight loss supplement is the 200mg of unroasted Coffea canephora robusta, Robusta coffee in plain English, that is present in each tablet.

This coffee contains Chlorogenic Acid which has potential for helping you lose weight.

The acid also shows promise in reducing high blood pressure and in lowering insulin resistance in people with type 2 diabetes.

On the other hand the amount of coffee isn’t so much as to trigger nervousness or sleeplessness.

Of course, this may vary from user to user; if you have caffeine intolerance for example this product may not be for you.

The probiotic Bacillus coagulans reduces cholesterol and helps improves arthritis, both of which are useful for tackling obesity.

Apart from that this product has a large number of vitamins and minerals that are excellent for busting stress and tiredness and boosting energy.

Why is that helpful?

Because if you receive an energy boost and don’t feel depressed your appetite in general and for hankering for junk food will shrink.

That should contribute to losing weight.

Bacillus coagulans• Reduces cholesterol.
• Fights Rheumatoid Arthritis which may be caused by obesity.
• Other benefits – Relieves IBS* and boosts immunity.
*insulin resistance – Insulin lowers blood sugar levels in diabetes. However many people develop resistance to insulin which means they will have to take more and more insulin to lower their blood sugar.

**anti-hyperglycemic – Lowers blood glucose which means it can reduce diabetes.

Directions

  • 2 capsules bi-daily (twice daily) which means 4 capsules in 24 hours.
  • You should take them just before having a meal.

What I Liked

Coffee-Probiotic duo take care of excessive weight and most of its associated problems.

Amount of coffee not so high as to trigger negative effects.

A large number of vitamins and minerals will boost energy and kill stress. This helps curb appetite.

I don’t think it will affect your stomach.

What I Didn’t Like

You may need to increase your water intake.

May not be suitable for users with caffeine intolerance.

03. Hyperbiotics Better Body – Probiotics for Weight Loss Support Review

This offering from Hyperbiotics includes a number of probiotics carefully chosen to help shed weight and also deal with problems allied with obesity.

Apart from that it also contains white kidney bean extract which is known to be able to block carbohydrate absorption.

You should start seeing weight loss results within a fortnight. And because of the white kidney bean extract you don’t need to stop taking starchy foods altogether.

The probiotics should also make you feel more energetic which should increase satiety (bring your appetite under control, in plain English) and reduce craving for starchy foods.

If you suffer from hypothyroidism (weak or underactive thyroid) and want to lose weight, you can try this out.

Mind you, if you do keep consuming starchy foods at the same level as you were before you may experience some bloating and flatulence. That is part of what is called the ‘detox process’ in a probiotic regimen.

On a normal diet or if you reduce consumption of starchy foods it should help you with bloating and associated symptoms and on the whole give you a refreshed feeling.

The probiotic strains are listed below.

05. Bio-x4 Probiotic, Metabolism Boost, Appetite Suppress, Digest Help, 4 in One, 90 Capsules by Nucific Review

It includes a number of probiotic strains that are known for reducing weight and also helping with some of the issues generally associated with obesity such as cholesterol, heart problems and diabetes.

In practice however I think this is more of an enabler rather than directly reducing weight.

Meaning that it boosts energy, reduces craving for food and so on, enabling you to diet and exercize which in turn will cut the flab.

This supplement includes Green Tea extract, which includes epigallocatechin gallate which is known to enhance weight loss.

On the other hand Green Tea extract also has a little caffeine. I don’t think it’ll affect anybody but if you are sensitive or allergic to caffeine, tread lightly around this supplement.

It should definitely reduce stomach cramps, bloating and so on.

The probiotic strains are listed below.

Lactobacillus acidophilus• Lowers cholesterol.
• Resists heart disease.
• Lowers insulin resistance* in diabetes.
• Soothes inflammation.
• Other benefits – increases iron content and boosts immunity.
Lactobacillus rhamnosus• Particularly useful at helping women achieve sustainable weight loss.
• Anti-inflammatory.
• Strong anti-hyperglycemic** property.
• Other benefits – helps with ulcers and resists skin issues like acne and eczema.
Lactobacillus plantarum• Lowers body weight and glucose, insulin and leptin levels.
• Lowers blood pressure and reduces inflammation.
• Other benefits – increases iron and calcium absorption; helps produce B vitamins.
Bifidobacterium lactis• Brings BMI*** within control.
• Improves glucose tolerance which means it resists diabetes.
• Other benefits – boosts immunity and resists allergies and infections.
Bifidobacterium animalis• Improves Body Mass Index.
• Reduces cholesterol.
• Improves glucose tolerance.
• Other benefits – fights some infections, antioxidant and specially beneficially for older users.
*insulin resistance – Insulin lowers blood sugar levels in diabetes. However many people develop resistance to insulin which means they will have to take more and more insulin to lower their blood sugar.

**anti-hyperglycemic – Lowers blood glucose which means it can reduce diabetes.

***BMI – Body Mass Index.

Directions

  • Take one capsule before each meal. You can easily pop it down with some water.
  • Do not take more than 3 a day.
  • If you face side effects like cramping, gas or breakouts, try reducing the dosage.

What I Liked

 Reduces craving for food.

Boosts energy so you can work out more.

Helps with issues like constipation, bloating and so on.

What I Didn’t Like

It may not reduce weight significantly by itself.

You may experience bloating, cramps and so on initially. Try reducing the dosage. If bloating does not let up, stop taking it.

What would you look for in selecting a probiotic for weight loss?

One may think this is a silly question to ask. If you’re searching for a probiotic to lose weight, you’d look for strains that help you lose weight, right?

That’s only half true.

Being overweight has some associated ill effects. You will get more value from your probiotic if it helps you counter such issues. The common problems are

  • Inflammation
  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • Fatty liver disease
  • Kidney problems
  • High cholesterol

A good all-round probiotic solution for excessive weight should address some of these issues.

Then of course there are the issues that are common to any probiotic.

CFU Count CFU stands for ‘Colony Forming Unit’. It’s a measure of how many bacteria there are in the supplement. Generally, a CFU Count between 5 billion to 50 billion is considered good.

Delivery System This refers to the form of the probiotic – whether it’s a pearl or a pill, a capsule etc. There are 2 issues to watch out for

  • One, whether it’s convenient to take. That is, whether it’s fairly small, easy to swallow and whether it leaves any aftertaste.
  • Two, whether it can withstand body acids. The probiotic will have to go a long way through the GI tract before reaching the gut. Along the way it will be exposed to a lot of body acids. Unless it’s adequately protected, it will degrade and adequate probiotic bacteria may not reach your gut.

Potency This is a guarantee that your product will maintain its strength (in terms of CFU) till its expiry date. That is, a 50 CFU Probiotic won’t reduce to 40 CFU after a few months.

Shelf Stability This one is related to potency. It means that potency will be maintained if you keep the product on a shelf, that is, if you don’t refrigerate it. However if you want, you can always refrigerate it, there’s no harm.

Clearly labelled additives You should look for the additives, whether they’re labelled clearly. Many possible additives irritate users. In particular I’d recommend you use Probiotics that are non-GMO, gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free.

So, I’ve given you a lot of info based on which you can select a probiotic for weight loss by yourself but I think I can do you one better.

I can clearly point to one of my top 5 weight loss probiotics as the absolute best probiotic for weight loss.

Hyperbiotics Better Body – Probiotics for Weight Loss Support

One, the probiotic content is selected strategically to deal with excessive weight and associated issues.

Two, you should start seeing results with your weight – flatter stomach, old clothes fitting better and so on, the horse not neighing so much when you climb on it and so on – within a fortnight.

Three, you may try this for weight loss even if you have hypothyroidism, which is a big thing.

Four, it should help with GI tract issues like constipation, flatulence and so on.

And five, I think it will help with skin issues like acne as well and generally improve skin health.

That’s about it.

If you feel there’s a probiotic for weight loss I’ve missed, drop a comment.
