Can you get them?

As Obama would say, Yes You Can.

All you need is a suitably lengthening and voluminizing mascara.

Which Lengthening Mascara to use?

As any Unsullyd regular will tell you, ‘which one to use’ will not be an issue once you join the Unsullyd family. I’ll tell you all you need to know.

The Best Lengthening Mascara

01. L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Original Mascara Review

This mascara by L’Oreal Paris comes in a sleek but secure package, easy to store in your handbag.

It shouldn’t flake or smudge much for reasonable periods of time, say 12 hours. However, just to be on the safe side, give it a bit of time to dry when you’re applying it.

That being said, it is NOT waterproof and you may need to touch up your eyes if it’s raining or you’re sweating.

The applicator ensures volume but is not so thick or unwieldy that it can’t separate your lashes.

Speaking of application, be careful while applying it.

Don’t overdip the applicator and take too much product otherwise you could end up with spider lashes. Clean the applicator properly before using it to touch up your eyebrows.

You may use it to fill, thicken and define your brows. It isn’t too pricey and you may well get a bargain with respect to your more expensive brow liner and so on.

The key ingredients are listed below.

SolventWater
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Beeswax, Palmitic Acid, Dimethiconol
EmulsifierBeeswax, Stearic Acid, Triethanolamine, Palmitic Acid, Hydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Polymethacrylate
CleansingStearic Acid
BufferTriethanolamine
Skin SoothingAcacia Senegal Gum
ThickeningAcacia Senegal Gum, Carnauba Wax
Film FormerHydroxyethylcellulose, Sodium Polymethacrylate
HumectantVitamin B5*
PreservativeImidazolidinyl Urea, Methylparaben, Propylparaben
Anti-foamingSimethicone
AntioxidantBHT
Antistatic AgentPolyquaternium-10

*As Panthenol.

Directions

  • Carefully take an optimal amount of mascara on the applicator. If it seems too much, remove some by rubbing the applicator along the sides of the container.
  • Place the brush at the base of your lashes and gently sweep it towards the tip.
  • Since it’s not waterproof removal shouldn’t be too difficult. Any standard makeup remover, warm baby oil or even a good shower should suffice.

What I Liked

Good staying power under adverse conditions.

Reasonably smudge, fade and flake proof.

Sleek, easy to carry and use package.

The applicator is neither too thick nor too thin.

Easy to remove.

May be used by men to define their brows.

What I Didn’t Like

Nice staying power but NOT waterproof. May run in sweat or rain.

Imidazolidinyl Urea may release formaldehyde (within the safety limit though).

Contains Methylparaben and Propylparaben.

You should be careful to not take too much mascara on the applicator else you could end up with spider lashes.

The Best Lengthening Mascara With 3-D Fiber Lashes

02. 3D Fiber Lash Mascara Review

First things first; these are lash micro fibers, NOT falsies.

The obvious advantage of micro fibers over false lashes is they are a lot lighter physically on your lashes. Falsies naturally weigh down your lashes and you expend energy resisting that.

There may be some confusion over one of the tubes being dry. One of the two tubes contains dry lash micro fibers that you stick on to your lash line. That tube is supposed to be dry.

Always remember to apply the gel twice. An initial lower layer, then you apply the fibers (which have their own applicator/wand) then a second layer on top.

If your fibers are flaking/falling off chances are you’re not putting on sufficient gel in the upper layer.

If you apply fibers in excess it may result in clumping. Use the gel applicator/wand or a Q-Tip to gently sweep some of the fibers away.

You will look very good, provided you go for the long fluttering lashes look. However there is a significant trade-off.

If you don’t place the fibers correctly OR you rub your eyes a lot the fibers may dislodge and fall into your eye. And that hurts.

On the other hand it is well resistant to sweat and tears (water) so you can rest easy on that count.

However it’s not water proof and removing it should be no great struggle.

Contact lens users should not face any excessive problem.

That being said, if you use contacts, use fibers only on special occasions. Better safe than sorry!

Directions

  • Use the gel first. Place the applicator at the base of your lashes and gently sweep to the tip.
  • When you feel you’ve thoroughly lined the lashes, gently place the dry fibers as you like them.
  • Wait for a bit for the fibers to latch on.
  • Apply another coat of the gel on top of the fibers.
  • Removal is pretty easy. Warm water on a cotton pad should do it. If it doesn’t try warm baby oil or makeup remover.

What I Liked

You can use the gel/mascara only OR both the gel and the fibers.

You may even lengthen your own lashes with the fibers.

Resistant to sweat and water (not ‘water proof’ though).

 Easy to remove.

Contact lens users should not face any problems.

 It can ‘hold’ a curl.

What I Didn’t Like

If the fibers don’t attach correctly and fall into your eyes it will hurt.

If you apply fibers in excess it will clump.

Overall application is difficult and requires practice.

If you use contact lenses better to use fibers only on special occasions.

The Best Mascara For Length

03. L’Oréal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes Lengthening Mascara Review

First things first; this is a ‘tubing mascara’. What does that mean?

This mascara literally forms a tube on your lash, enhancing length and volume. This is different from the micro fibers which settle down on and among your lashes.

That makes the removal a bit different too. You need to sweep or scrape fibers off whereas in tubing mascara you need to pull them off.

Don’t be alarmed, gentle tugs should do. You will not need to pull forcefully.

Step 1 (white end) is a kind of base or primer for Step 2. You may experiment using Step 1 as a primer for other kinds of mascara as well.

Just be warned you can’t buy Step 1 separately if you run out too early. You have to purchase the entire set.

Acrylates Copolymer helps your lashes stay in place (that is, just as you style them) by forming a film on them and stopping them from absorbing moisture.

Denatured Alcohol can dry out your skin with long-term use. Even though exposure to the skin is low in case of a mascara I’d recommend you don’t use this too often.

The main ingredients follow.

Step 1 Ingredients

SolventWater/Aqua
ThickenerParaffin, Carnauba Wax, Acacia Senegal Gum
CleansingPotassium Cetyl Phosphate
Hair FixativeAcrylates Copolymer
Film FormingAcrylates Copolymer, Hydroxyethylcellulose

Skin SoothingAcacia Senegal Gum
HumectantVitamin B5*
Skin ConditioningHydrogenated Jojoba Oil, Hydrogenated Palm Oil
Chelating AgentDisodium EDTA
Anti-foamingSimethicone

*As Panthenol.

Step 2 Ingredients

SolventWater/Aqua, Butylene Glycol, Denatured Alcohol
Film Forming Styrene/Acrylates Copolymer
EmulsifierPolysorbate 80
AstringentDenatured Alcohol
CleansingSodium Laureth-12 Sulfate
EmollientIsohexadecane
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Ethylparaben and 3 more parabens
Chelating AgentDisodium EDTA
AbsorbentSilica

Directions

  • First apply Step 1 (white end). It is like a primer (nourishes and ) prepping your lashes for Step 2.
  • Immediately after apply Step 1 to the first eye apply Step 2 (black end). Step 1 should not be allowed to dry before adding Step 2.
  • Do not apply Step 1 to both eyes and then go for Step 2. Step 1 will dry out.
  • It should be easily removed by warm water. Cup warm water and place it on your eyes. Repeat that a few times.
  • Then you can just pull the mascara right off.

What I Liked

Quite resistant to non-warm water so won’t come off if you cry or apply eye drops.

Removal is pretty easy with warm water.

Safe option for those with sensitive eyes or contact lens users.

It is reasonably smudge proof so no racoon eyes!

The base/primer adds substantial volume to your eyes.

What I Didn’t Like

 Contains a number of parabens.

Denatured Alcohol can dry out your skin.

It takes a little effort to make it hold curls.

The Best Defining Lengthening Mascara

04. COVERGIRL Clump Crusher Extensions LashBlast Mascara Review

COVERGIRL’s Clump Crusher Mascara is really good at separating your lashes and pulling them out to full length.

The wand has a cute little curve to it which I find adorable; and useful, for sweeping out clumps and dirt. However some users may not appreciate the curved wand.

It doesn’t really come with extensions. It adds length and volume by straightening out your lashes and adding lustre.

While such an approach may not enhance volume or length as much as extensions do it avoids the extra weight that extensions put on your lashes.

Although the name ‘Polyethylene’ among the ingredients may cause alarm, don’t worry. Polyethylene is a really gentle abrasive.

Again, don’t be alarmed at Sodium Laureth Sulfate. Unlike its cousin Sodium Lauryl Sulfate it is a safe ingredient.

The main ingredients are listed below.

SolventWater/Eau, Propylene Glycol, Denatured Alcohol, Propylene Carbonate, Benzyl Alcohol
EmollientGlyceryl Stearate
EmulsifierGlyceryl Stearate, Stearic Acid, Triethanolamine, Synthetic Wax, Xanthan Gum

Skin ConditioningVitamin E**
Anti-foamingSimethicone
ChelatingTrisodium EDTA

*As Ascorbyl Palmitate.

**As Tocopherol.

***As Panthenol.

Directions

  • When you first use it, twist/pull off the cap. It should be replaced by the brush which has a cap end.
  • Start at the base of your lashes and move to the tip.
  • Use little wiggling motions to reduce clumping as much as possible.
  • You can remove it easily enough with warm soapy water. Use a makeup remover pad if necessary.

What I Liked

Separates lashes and brings them to full length.

Curved applicator is good for brushing out clumps and dirt.

Overall it works well to define and enhance your lashes.

It’s reasonably water resistant (not water proof).

What I Didn’t Like

Some users don’t like the curved wand.

The Best Mascara For Length And Volume

05. theBalm Mad Lash Mascara Review

If I had to choose ONE quality of this to broadcast it would be staying power. You can work out and it still should stay on!

It’ll even stay on through a nice snooze. However I must warn you it is not advisable to sleep with mascara on. If it does flake and fall into your eyes you could face a serious infection.

Polyvinyl Alcohol (used as a film forming agent) is a bit sensitizing. That being said, this mascara overall should not irritate you.

It is reasonably resistant to water so shouldn’t run or smudge if you cry or anything. However it is not waterproof so be careful.

The applicator is of the new ‘injection mold’ variety. It’s good at avoiding clumping and defines each lash well. However overall the lashes may look a bit unnatural.

So I’d recommend using this for the daily grind (workplace, shopping etc) but not for a night out or anywhere you’re likely to be intimate with someone.

The main ingredients follow.

SolventWater/Eau, Denatured Alcohol
Hair ConditioningRice Bran Wax
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Palmitic Acid, Candelilla Wax
AntioxidantHydrogenated Olive Oil, Vitamin C**
AstringentDenatured Alcohol
ThickeningCarnauba Wax, Acacia Senegal Gum, Candelilla Wax

Skin SoothingAcacia Senegal Gum
HumectantVitamin B5*
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin
Film FormingPolyvinyl Alcohol, VP/VA Copolymer

*As Panthenol.

**As Ascorbyl Palmitate.

Directions

  • Remember to twist and open. If you pull straight out it may make a mess.
  • Start at the base of the lashes and sweep to the top.
  • Even though it’s not waterproof I’d recommend eye makeup remover to remove.
  • Best used for everyday outings where you’re not likely to be up close and intimate.

What I Liked

Good staying power – should not fade or flake easily.

 Reasonably water resistant.

Good bet for everyday use like at work.

The shade is neither too light nor too shocking.

The brush stops clumping and defines each lash well.

What I Didn’t Like

 Not waterproof.

From up close your lashes may look a bit stiff.

The brush is not as good as twisted wire brushes in picking up mascara so you may have to apply a few coats to get a good shade.

What should you look for in selecting a Lengthening Mascara?

Well, when you’re using mascara you’re enhancing your lashes which are strands of hair.

The first thing you’d want to know is what kind of mascara a product is. Is it

Traditional mascara which just cleans away dirt, separates clumped lashes and makes each lash stand out.

Mascara with micro fibers which, in addition to a traditional mascara or gel, contains micro fibers which are evenly deposited among your lashes, enhancing volume.

Tubing mascara which forms a tube on each lash, elongating it.

Secondly you’d want to check out the wand/applicator/brush. Is it

Twisted wire which is good at picking up product so you need apply fewer coats.

Injection mold which is good at reducing clumping.

Also, which way does the brush taper?

Traditional brushes start widest and gradually taper down. This is useful for curling and general application.

But some brushes start narrow and taper out till they are widest at the outer end. These come in especially handy for the corner lashes (both inner and outer corner).

Third you’d want your mascara to be/contain ingredients that are

Hair fixative to help hair (lashes) retain a particular style by stopping them from absorbing moisture.

Conditioners (which includes Emollients and Humectants) to help keep your skin and hair lubricated and soft.

Film formers to give your lashes a glossy look.

Antioxidants to retard aging and environmental damage.

Astringents to shrink pores.

The mascara itself requires certain properties like

Buffer to keep it from becoming too acidic or alkaline.

Chelating agents to prevent contamination or discoloration (distinct from Preservatives).

Suspenders to help certain particles settle.

Emulsifiers to stop the mascara (emulsion) from separating into various components.

A Neat Trick – Normally, you’d apply multiple coats of mascara without allowing it to dry between coats. However, if your mascara flakes, you could try allowing one coat to dry without applying the next one. Your flaking should reduce.

Don’t ask me why this works; I honestly don’t have a good explanation. If you suspect you know why, please do tell!

Hygiene

Sometimes mascaras start drying too soon. A natural temptation in such a case would be to use water to loosen them up.

That would be a very big mistake.

Mascara sits so very close to your eye; you need to take precautions and maintain hygiene. At the minimum, use contact lens solution to soften up drying mascara.

A second aspect of mascara hygiene is to be very selfish and NEVER, EVER share it with anyone. You’re doing both yourself and your BFF (who’s presumably asking to share) a big favor by saving both of you from a very high risk of infection. I kid you not.

OK

By now you know enough to make a choice of lengthening mascara by yourself but there is a definite best choice I think you should check out.

L’Oréal Paris Double Extend Beauty Tubes Lengthening Mascara

I prefer tubing mascara over traditional mascara because of how it adds length to the lashes.

Ditto over fibers because the tubes are chemically bonded with your lashes and won’t fall off easily.

The tubes are relatively easy to remove – just immerse your lashes in warm water to loosen the bonds and you can gently tug them off.

It’s reasonably resistant to smudging, fading and flaking.

And as far as the look or shade is concerned, trust me, you’re on safe ground.

You have to follow the 2-step process but surely that’s a small price to pay for Lovely Lashes.

Save The Base For Last!

Ms Mirella from Youtube has a great tip if you want to really go to town and curl your lashes. She suggests starting not at the root but at the tip. Do the tips first, then the middle and save the base for last. This really curls your lashes without loading or drooping them.

For any Mascara, shelf life is NOT more than 6 months (3-6 months) after you open it.

Old mascara could harm you.

Well, that’s about it. If you think there’s a lengthening mascara out there that’s better than the ones I’ve selected, please do tell me about it.

The good suggestions will get a shout-out on Facebook or Twitter!
