A lot of things look good when shining. Our faces, however, are not among them.

The best way to deal with such a situation is to use good cleansers that will cleanse oil and dirt off of your skin.

A fat lot of good that advice is when you’re getting ready to go out.

What you need in such a case is a good foundation for oily skin.

And, as you know, that’s where I come in. I’ve reviewed the 20 hottest selling foundations available and come up with the 10 Best Foundation For Oily Skin.

Fun Fact

If you need higher coverage at specific areas it’s better to stipple foundation than just sweep it. Click To Tweet

The Best Foundation For Oily Skin

01. COVERGIRL Clean Pressed Powder Foundation Review

The first thing you will notice (and like) about this is how light it is. It does not weigh on your skin at all which is a mark of a good foundation.

You can wear it for hours; it won’t cake.

It’s light of tone as well. It will melt into your skin; another hallmark of a good foundation.

If you want strong coverage, though this may fall a little short. In other words, you may have to apply more than one coat for decent coverage.

It has a weak but noticeable scent. If you don’t like a flowery/aromatic scent it may not be for you.

There is another slight risk it may melt under heat. So if you live in a hot area (say, a Nevadan) you may want to consider carrying this and face wipes so you can wipe it off and re-apply.

Talc (used mainly as an absorbent and slip modifier) is also used to control shine (making it a great addition for oily skin foundations).

BHT is a potent antioxidant but it’s mainly used to preserve products by slowing reaction with oxygen (oxidation can degrade the product).

The main ingredients are listed below.

AbsorbentTalc, Kaolin, Oat Kernel Flour
Slip ModifierTalc, Zinc Stearate
ColorantZinc Stearate, Iron Oxides
EmollientZinc Stearate, Mineral Oil, Dimethicone
Anti-cakingZinc Stearate, Kaolin
AntioxidantOat Kernel Flour, BHT
Skin SoothingOat Kernel Flour
FragranceParfum
PreservativeMethylparaben, Sodium Dehydroacetate, Propylparaben

Directions

  • Use the puff to sweep the powder over your face.
  • If you think it’s uneven, use a kabuki brush to even out the tone across your face.
  • To remove apply any good cleanser for oily skin over your face – remember to include the hairline, under the chin and around the ears – and let it stay for 15 seconds.
  • Then use a white cotton washcloth or makeup remover pads to gently cleanse the foundation.

What I Liked

It should even out skin tone quite well.

Gives a great de-oiled matte look.

Doesn’t irritate skin.

What I Didn’t Like

Some users may not appreciate the scent.

May melt under heat.

The Best Drugstore Foundation For Oily Skin

02. SHANY Perfect Canvas Liquid Foundation Review

The best thing about this is that it’s quite matte/dry. That makes this perfect if you have oily skin.

However if you have dry or even normal skin I’d suggest you use a dewy primer/foundation alongwith this to balance things out.

This is very easy on the skin with virtually no chances of irritation. If you have sensitive skin I’d suggest going for it.

Coming to the shade, maybe you should spend some time deciding which one to apply (there are 8 different shades available).

As I’ll explain below, shade isn’t something I can say is best or worst. It depends on your skin tone and personal choice.

One tip I can give you for shade and coverage is – be patient. Let one coat dry and see how you look and feel before applying another.

However if you choose too quickly you may find the one you’ve chosen has a tint you don’t like. I’d say do a patch test (apply the foundation on a small patch of skin) and see which shade suits you before making a permanent choice.

Ascorbyl Palmitate (Vitamin C) is especially good at resisting environmental damage.

BHT is a potent antioxidant but it’s mainly used to preserve products by slowing reaction with oxygen (oxidation can degrade the product).

The main ingredients are listed below.

SolventWater (Aqua), Butylene Glycol
EmollientDimethicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Glyceryl Dilaurate, Stearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Hydrogenated Lecithin
Skin ConditioningPhenyl Trimethicone, Polydecene, Vitamin E*, Vitamin A**
Anti-foamingPhenyl Trimethicone, Stearyl Alcohol
HumectantButylene Glycol
PreservativeCaprylyl Glycol, Phenoxyethanol
EmulsifierStearyl Alcohol, Glyceryl Stearate, Steareth-2, Steareth-21, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Xanthan Gum, Cellulose Gum
Film FormerPolymethyl Methacrylate, Cellulose Gum, Galactoarabinan
CleanserPEG-100 Stearate, Steareth-21, TEA-Lauryl Sulfate
AbsorbentKaolin, Acrylates Crosspolymer, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate
Viscosity IncreasingXanthan Gum, Magnesium Aluminum Silicate, Cellulose Gum
AntioxidantVitamin E*, Vitamin A**, Vitamin C***, BHT
ChelatingDisodium EDTA

*As Tocopheryl Acetate.

**As Retinyl Palmitate.

***As Ascorbyl Palmitate.

Directions

  • First clean and dry your skin.
  • Then apply the foundation preferably using a puff or brush. Use the puff for initial application and the brush to even it out.
  • You may be able to wash it off with water. Use a good cleanser for oily skin if you need.

What I Liked

 Quite dry/matte.

 Lightweight on the skin.

 Good coverage.

 Covers blemishes well.

 Cruelty free (no animal testing).

What I Didn’t Like

You may need to do a patch test to decide on which shade to use.

Be careful and patient with the dispenser/pump. It tends to squirt product sometimes!

The Best Full Coverage Foundation For Oily Skin

03. La Roche-PosayToleriane Teint Mattifying Mousse Matte Foundation Review

The first thing to note about this is that it offers limited protection from the sun – SPF 20.

While this is OK for, say a shopping trip, any serious sun protection involves AT LEAST SPF 30.

So if you’re likely to spend some time in direct sunlight, you cannot depend on this for SPF protection.

The next big thing is its coverage which is great.

I would say this provides good coverage under a wide spectrum of situations – from atop a theatrical stage (with the various hot lights glaring on you) to a walk in the fields.

One thing which amused me about this product is that it looks cakey (mousse-like) and may start to cake say 2-3 hours after application.

However I must warn you this one is strictly for oily skin. If you have dry skin avoid this else your skin will dry up even more.

The main ingredients are listed below.

EmollientDimethicone, Undecane, Silica Silylate
Viscosity IncreasingDimethicone Crosspolymer, Silica Silylate
ScentTridecane
AntioxidantVitamin E*
Skin ConditioningVitamin E*, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Vitamin A**
AbsorbentPerlite
CleansingDisodium Stearoyl Glutamate
Opacifying AgentAluminum Hydroxide

*As Tocopheryl Acetate.

**As Retinyl Linoleate.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your skin.
  • You can apply it over moisturizer.
  • Apply on your face and neck, taking care to avoid the eyes.
  • Use a kabuki brush to even out the tone.
  • Use a good cleanser for oily skin to wash it off.

What I Liked

Very good mattifying finish for oily skin.

 Limited sun protection SPF 20.

 Strong coverage.

 No irritation.

 Lightweight on your skin.

What I Didn’t Like

Avoid if you don’t have oily skin.

May cake a little after long wear.

The Best Powder Foundation For Oily Skin

04. Sheer Cover Studio  Perfect Shade Mineral Foundation Review

It’s quite lightweight on your skin. You may not even feel like you’re wearing foundation.

Continuing on the ‘light’ theme, shade/tone may be a bit of a problem for those with darker skin.

They have 4 different shades – Light, Dark, Medium and Tan.

While the lighter side should not yield problems, those with darker skin may find the appropriate shade to be too light for them.

The company seems to have recently revamped the line, and the shades don’t seem to match exactly.

I would advise a patch test to check for shade.

If you do get your shade, however, it’s very good at covering blemishes.

Lauroyl Lysine is quite good at softening the skin which may prove soothing.

The main ingredients are listed below.

AbsorbentBoron Nitride
Opacifying AgentBoron Nitride
Skin BrighteningBisabolol
Skin SoothingBisabolol
Skin ConditioningRooibos* Leaf Extract, Lauroyl Lysine
Viscosity ControllingLauroyl Lysine
*Aspalathus linearis.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your skin.
  • Take some foundation in the lid.
  • Swirl the brush around in the lid to collect the foundation and sweep it onto your face.
  • Use a good cleanser for oily skin to wash it off.

What I Liked

Good at covering blemishes.

Lightweight on your skin.

Perfect for taking the shine off of oily skin.

Caking should not be a problem.

What I Didn’t Like

This is another one that may not be suitable for users with dry skin.

Choosing a shade may take time, especially if you have darker skin.

The Best Liquid Foundation For Oily Skin

 05. Clinique Even Better Makeup SPF15 Review

I would recommend using this with a primer to get the best effect.

This is another of those foundations that people with even slightly dry skin may consider avoiding. You could get breakouts and what not.

If your skin isn’t oily I’d recommend doing a patch test before making this your go-to foundation.

You will appreciate how light this is on the skin. It won’t even feel like you’re wearing anything.

Even better, the light consistency is paired with nice coverage. It ensures that your blemishes do not stand out.

If you want additional coverage, use a concealer.

There isn’t any cakiness either. Once this has gone on, you can trust it to hold without flaking or cracking.

Application is a breeze. All you need to do is squeeze out a moderate amount and massage that over your face.

Once you’ve done the initial massaging, use a brush to even it out.

However I should warn you that as you start to run low the bottle will start to squirt more than squeeze.

So you may end up with stray squirts on your clothes or elsewhere. Be careful about that.

Another thing you will need to be careful about is that it may start to fade and melt after about 3-4 hours or if you keep sweating.

For such situations my advice would be to carry wet wipes, some remover and the foundation so you can quickly touch yourself up. Or avoid close-ups with people because from afar you will look fine.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your skin.
  • Squeeze out a moderate amount and massage onto your face with the sponge applicator.
  • Be careful when you’re running low; the bottle sometimes squirts out the product.
  • Use a good remover to wash it off.

What I Liked

 Light on the skin.

Good coverage, especially given how light it is on the skin.

 Easy to apply.

Initially there should be no cracking or flaking.

What I Didn’t Like

You may need to use a concealer for coverage.

When you run low the bottle starts to squirt out the product.

You may face some fading and flaking after some time or after moderate exercise.

The Best Foundation For Oily Acne Prone Skin

 06. Clinique Acne Solutions Liquid Makeup Review

In addition to being on my list of foundations for oily skin, this liquid makeup by Clinique has also been selected by Elle as a good foundation for oily skin.

A single application lasts. You can apply this in the morning and you’re good to go till late in the evening (by when your workday ends and you’re home).

If you need to touch up, there’s more good news. You can wash it off with soap and water after which you can apply a fresh coat.

It gives you a reasonably matte finish which is useful for most cases of acne-prone skin.

On the other hand it’s well-stacked with moisturizers so people with drier skin types may use this.

However as always I’d recommend testing it before adopting it for regular use.

It offers reasonably good coverage and should not cake or flake within most reasonable periods of application.

Talc, in addition to its other uses, can control shine effectively which is necessary for oily skin.

Caffeine when used topically (on the skin) can improve redness of the skin but (a bit ironically) that can sensitize your skin a bit.

The main ingredients are listed below.

The ‘Active Ingredient’ is 0.5% Salicylic Acid which exfoliates your pores preventing build-up of sebum and thus acne.

SolventMethyl Trimethicone, Water, Dipropylene Glycol, Denatured Alcohol, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Carbonate
Skin ConditioningMethyl Trimethicone, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, 10-Hydroxydecanoic Acid, Vitamin E*

PreservativePhenoxyethanol
*As Tocopherol.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your skin.
  • Cover the area you want to cover with one application.
  • You should be able to wash it off with soap and water.

What I Liked

Soap and water should suffice to remove which is good for a quick touch-up.

A single application should last for reasonable wearing times.

 Reasonably good coverage.

 Nice semi-matte finish.

What I Didn’t Like

May feel a trifle heavy on the skin.

Don’t add coats just for the sake of it.

This is not a medical formulation but you may consider consulting your doctor before using it.

The Best Matte Foundation For Oily Skin

 07. Mary Kay TimeWise Matte-Wear Liquid Foundation Review

It’s easy to apply and feels light on your skin.

There’s a nice balance between providing a matte finish and moisturizing which means both oily and dry skin types can use it as long as you’re not extremely oily or extremely dry.

It definitely won’t irritate you so go for it if you have sensitive skin.

First coat coverage may not satisfy some users but this is very buildable and an extra layer or two should enhance coverage well.

You may face some melting and/or fading but you should be fine if you can avoid close-ups. Otherwise you may need to carry wipes, a cleanser and the foundation.

Talc in addition to being an absorbent also controls shine which is critical if you have oily skin.

Diazolidinyl Urea is said to release formaldehyde, but within legal limits. If that bothers you, consider looking for a different foundation for your oily skin.

Titanium Dioxide has sunscreen properties. Although it is likely not present at such a concentration as to offer you UV protection by itself you may get some incremental UV protection from this.

The main ingredients are listed below.

SolventWater/Aqua, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, Propylene Glycol, Cyclohexasiloxane
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate, Dimethicone

*As Tocopheryl Acetate.

Directions

  • Wash and dry your face.
  • Squeeze some foundation onto your hand.
  • You can use your fingers but I’d suggest dipping a brush into the foundation and spreading it across your face.
  • You can try to remove using soap and water. If that doesn’t work use a good cleanser.

What I Liked

Good for moderately oily or moderately dry skin.

 Light on your skin.

 Reasonably good coverage.

 Not irritating.

What I Didn’t Like

 Includes 2 parabens.

May melt and/or fade after some time.

The Best Light Foundation For Oily Skin

 08. Clinique Even Better Makeup Broad Spectrum Spf15 Evens & Correct Foundation Review

The SPF is a nice combination of chemical sunscreen (Octinoxate) and physical (Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide).

Chemical sunscreens tend to be lighter on the skin (sometimes doubling as primers) and not to leave white marks.

Physical sunscreens offer more comprehensive protection (against nearly the entire UV spectrum) and are more stable.

Having lectured you I must stress that serious sun protection requires at least SPF 30. If that’s what you’re looking for, you should search for a good sunscreen for your face.

The foundation itself is quite creamy which I found quite adorable.

It doesn’t seem to include an astringent so as such it doesn’t counter pores. That in some cases may lead to the foundation sinking in and accentuating your pores.

However that should not be a problem for short wears. If you’re going to be wearing it long I would suggest carrying the foundation, remover wipes and a cleanser.

Which segues neatly into my next point – it’s quite easy to remove and apply. So touching up should not be a problem.

The main ingredients are listed below.

Active Ingredients – 5.9% Octinoxate, 3.5% Titanium Dioxide, 2.8% Zinc Oxide.

SolventWater/Aqua, Methyl Trimethicone, Butylene Glycol, Dipropylene Glycol
Skin ConditioningMethyl Trimethicone, Phenyl Trimethicone, Triethylhexanoin, Trimethylsiloxysilicate, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Lauryl PEG-9 Polidimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Grapefruit* Peel Extract, Acetyl Glucosamine, Dimethicone Crosspolymer-3, Vitamin E***

***As Tocopheryl Acetate.

****As Magnesium Ascorbyl Phosphate (also as Tetrahexyldecyl Phosphate).

Directions

  • Clean and dry your face.
  • Use the brush to apply the product over your face.
  • Spread the product out evenly to achieve a smooth finish. Sweep it in small circles to achieve the best coverage.
  • Use wipes/a cotton cloth and a good cleanser to remove it.

What I Liked

SPF 15 is always an advantage.

 Light on your skin.

 Good coverage.

 There should not be flaking.

What I Didn’t Like

Grapefruit Peel Extract may be sensitizing to your skin.

Will not suffice if you want serious sun protection.

May sink in and amplify pores. In such a situation avoid close-ups.

The Best Foundation For Oily Skin With Large Pores

 09. Shimarz Neutral Liquid Mineral Foundation Review

This has a noticeable scent. I like it; however some users may be averse to scents in their foundation.

It has a wide range of shades; I think you will definitely find one (or a combination) that suits you.

That brings me to the next point – its light texture. It doesn’t feel heavy on your skin at all which is critical if you’re going to combine foundation and/or apply multiple coats.

One little thing about this is the pump. It sometimes tends to squirt out excessive product. If you’re not careful some of it is going to be wasted.

Aloe Vera Leaf Juice can be very soothing on the skin.

The main ingredients are listed below.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your face.
  • Take some foundation (typically people prefer to take it on the back of their palms).
  • Use a puff or brush to apply it across your face.
  • Use a good cleanser or micellar water to remove it.

What I Liked

Lightweight on the skin. Suitable for multiple layers or combinations.

You should not face fading or melting.

Good coverage. Pores should not be a problem.

 Good matte finish.

 All natural ingredients.

Noticeable scent that some users may not like.

 Pump sometimes releases excessive product.

The Best Long Lasting Foundation For Oily Skin

 10. Maybelline New York Fit Me Matte Plus Poreless Foundation Review

Guess which foundation won a place in a selection of the top 10 foundations for oily skin by Instyle?

Granted, our Maybelline Matte Plus doesn’t occupy First Rank but when you consider that it costs fraction of what the first foundation on the list does, it’s a pretty good deal.

If you worry about foundation feeling heavy on your skin, there’s no need! This goes on like a breeze and stays that way.

Which is also good news if you intend to combine shades or apply more than one coat.

A common problem with foundations is the caked look many tend to give you. This one happily avoids such shenanigans. That takes the cake, doesn’t it?

This contains the well-known astringent Denatured Alcohol and so pores should not be a problem. Nevertheless there may be the teensiest chance of foundation settling into your pores or accentuating them otherwise.

The main ingredients are listed below.

SolventWater/Aqua, Cyclohexasiloxane, Isododecane, Denatured Alcohol, Cyclopentasiloxane, PEG-20
EmollientCyclohexasiloxane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate

Directions

  • Wash and dry your face.
  • Apply the foundation using your fingers or an applicator.
  • Even it out.
  • Use soap and water to remove.

What I Liked

 Light on your skin.

You should not face fading or melting.

 Good coverage.

 Easy to apply.

 No caking.

 Very low chance of melting.

What I Didn’t Like

Make sure to not pour out too much.

 May settle into pores.

What Should You Look For To Choose A Foundation For Oily Skin?

Shade is an important criterion. A foundation is supposed to even out skin tone, cover blemishes and give you a matte or dewy look.

In general a foundation that is too garish is not ideal.

Apart from that the choice of shade is completely unique to the user and there is no general ‘good shade’ or ‘bad shade’.

Coverage is another important criterion. Is your foundation

  • Sheer Cover meaning its pigment content is between 8% to 13%.
  • Light Cover implying pigment content between 13% to 18%.
  • Medium Cover covers foundations with 18% to 23% pigment content.
  • Full Cover are those foundations which have pigment content up to 35%. In certain cases it may go up to 50%.

There are some practical aspects like whether the foundation melts, cakes, fades and so on.

Moisturizers (Humectants, Emollients and other Skin Conditioners) are necessary to keep your skin soft and supple.

Opacifying Agents help reduce the visibility of blemishes.

For the purpose of making and maintaining the foundation the ingredients need to have certain properties like

Suspenders to stop particles from falling out of solution.

Emulsifiers to form and stabilize emulsions which are mixtures of normally immiscible liquids.

Binders to help other ingredients bind to your skin.

Absorbents to soak up stray liquids.

And so on.

Speaking very, very strictly, there are differences between a foundation and a BB Cream or a Concealer.

If you’re inquisitive about that, ask and thou shalt be answered!

While I can certainly help you select a good foundation 50% of the success lies in application. You can either buff (sweep in small circles) or stipple (dab in small spots) it. Each has its own features. Choose wisely.

Right.

While you certainly are equipped to select a foundation for oily skin by yourself there’s a clear winner I think you should check out.

Shimarz Neutral Liquid Mineral Foundation

I say this is the winner first and foremost because all the ingredients are natural. Seeing how foundation is something that’s going to remain on your face all day natural products are always a better idea..

Price-wise it’s mid-range. Not the cheapest available but nothing unreasonably high.

It doesn’t suffer from any major infirmity – good coverage, lightweight and the chances of melting, flaking and so on are low. It has a scent, but then, many users find that soothing.

If you absolutely want to avoid a scent, try SHANY Perfect Canvas Liquid Foundation, Paraben/Talc/Oil Free. It’s a good multivitamin option that should not irritate you.

Well, that’s about it!

If you think there’s a foundation that’s better for oily skin than the ones I’ve listed, tell me!

The good suggestions may get a shout-out on Facebook and Twitter.
