The Best Foundation For Dry Skin

01. L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation Review

The first thing you will notice (and love) about this foundation is that it’s very lightweight.

It may not even feel like you’re wearing any foundation.

It helps that the sunscreen is Octinoxate (a chemical sunscreen that is lighter on the skin than mineral sunscreens).

Coming to coverage I’d say this is light to medium coverage.

Of course there is ample scope for building seeing how light it is on your skin but you may have to work hard for high coverage.

It shouldn’t cake or pill. It may start to fade a little, say, 4 hours after application but I don’t think it’ll fade noticeably.

It includes BHT and Sodium Citrate to resist oxidization (sometimes a product oxidizes on your skin and acquires a dark tint).

However it may be prudent to be prepared for a touch-up to remedy any oxidization that may happen.

Coming to the core issue – dryness of skin – I would say this foundation does an excellent job of keeping you lubricated.

In addition to being a bulking agent, Magnesium Stearate is known for its lubricating property (moisturizing).

The key ingredients are listed below.

Active Ingredient – Octinoxate 3.2% (chemical sunscreen).

SolventWater/Aqua, Cyclopentasiloxane, Denatured Alcohol, Dipropylene Glycol, Isopropyl Alcohol
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, BIS-PEG/PPG-14/14 Dimethicone, Dimethicone, Ethylhexyl Hydroxystearate, Silica Silylate

Film FormingPolymethyl Methacrylate
AntioxidantVitamin E*, BHT
BulkingMagnesium Stearate, Silica Silylate, Alumina
BufferSodium Citrate
* As Tocopheryl Acetate and Tocopherol.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your face.
  • Apply the foundation to your cheeks, forehead and chin, sweeping outwards. A sponge should do.
  • Soap and water washes should suffice at removal. If it doesn’t, try cold cream and face scrub if you have that, or makeup remover.

What I Liked

Nice dewy finish suitable for dry skin.

Lightweight on your skin and buildable.

Light to medium coverage.

No caking or pilling.

You should not face any problems with irritation.

What I Didn’t Like

Isopropyl Alcohol may prove sensitizing on your skin.

Be prepared to touch up in case it oxidizes.

It may fade, though I don’t think the fading is noticeable.

The Best Drugstore Foundation For Dry Skin

02. Maybelline Dream Liquid Mousse Airbrush Foundation Review

If you have dry skin your skin will be itching to get up to shenanigans like peeling and flaking.

In such a situation, I think an airbrush foundation (which means you spray it on) will feel refreshing and comforting on your skin, especially in winter.

Now of course you spray on a foundation and then it sits on your face like a sumo wrestler, that kinda spoils the fun, doesn’t it?

I can say that is not going to happen. The foundation has a creamy texture but is extremely light.

In fact, chances are, some users may find it too watery.

Coming to coverage and finish, I would say its forte lies in sprucing you up for everyday situations like work, taking your kids to school and so on.

The coverage is quite light. Of course you can always build but there’s a practical limit to how many layers you can slather on.

Again, the finish is dewy but not excessively so. It’s very good at accentuating your natural beauty.

If I had to pick a flaw I’d say it seems to not last. It may start to fade or melt within a few hours.

However you can easily remedy that by blotting out the odd looking parts and spraying on a new layer!

The main ingredients follow.

SolventWater/Aqua, Isododecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Butylene Glycol, PEG-9
EmollientIsododecane, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate, Aluminum Hydroxide
Anti-foamingDimethicone, Silica Dimethyl Silylate
Skin ProtectantDimethicone, Aluminum Hydroxide
HumectantGlycerin, Butylene Glycol, PEG-9, Sodium Hyaluronate
EmulsifierPEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Polyglyceryl-4 Isostearate
Skin ConditioningPEG-9 Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, PEG-10 -Dimethicone, Cetyl PEG/PPG-10/1 Dimethicone, Caprylyl Glycol, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate
Viscosity ControllingButylene Glycol, Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Sodium Chloride, Silica Dimethyl Silylate
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Caprylyl Glycol
CleansingDisodium Stearoyl Glutamate
OpacifyingAluminum Hydroxide
Suspending AgentSilica Dimethyl Silylate

Directions

  • Clean and dry your skin.
  • Spray it on and use your fingers to massage it in. Don’t hang around; it is rather fast drying.
  • You will need makeup remover to wash it off.
  • There may be some product at the bottom of the bottle that just won’t spray. In such a case don’t throw the bottle away.
  • Start on a second bottle. It will also have some remnant product at the bottom.
  • Take off the spray caps. Balance one bottle upside down on top of the other allowing the product to flow into the bottom bottle. Then use the bottom bottle. Keep repeating for every bottle.

What I Liked

Spray foundations feels great on dry skin.

 Creamy but light texture; buildable.

 Natural dewy finish.

If it melts or flakes you can easily re-apply by spraying!

What I Didn’t Like

Coverage is a bit light.

May start melting after a few hours.

The Best Full Coverage Foundation For Dry Skin

03. L’Oréal Paris Visible Lift Blur Foundation Review

You need to be careful when you’re taking the product from the bottle otherwise some will go waste.

It absolutely does not sit tightly on your skin like a mask and is easily buildable.

The finish is best described as silky. Dewy, but not too much so, and with a nice sheen.

I would say coverage is light to medium. It will complement your natural face well, but, if you have some specific complaint like, say melasma, you may need to use a concealer.

But overall it should do a good job evening out your skin tone.

The texture resembles a mousse but is much lighter than a traditional mousse.

It may settle into your wrinkles so if you have that problem you should consider using a primer as a base before you apply this foundation.

In addition to preserving the foundation, Chlorphenesin is a good biocide which means it helps clean your skin and stop odor by resisting microbial growth.

The following are the main ingredients.

Active Ingredients (SPF) – 7.5% Octinoxate/Octyl Methoxycinnamate.

SolventCyclopentasiloxane, Water, PEG-9
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Isotridecyl Isononanoate, Aluminum Hydroxide
Viscosity ControllingDimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite, Aluminum Hydroxide
EmulsifierDimethicone Crosspolymer, Polydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone
Suspending AgentDimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite
HumectantGlycerin, PEG-9, pro-Vitamin B5***, Sodium PCA, Urea, Trehalose, Soluble Collagen, Sodium Hyaluronate
Skin ConditioningPolydimethylsiloxyethyl Dimethicone, PEG-10 Dimethicone, Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate, Lycium barbarum Fruit Extract, Vitamin E*, Polyquaternium-51
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Chlorphenesin, Methylparaben, Potassium Sorbate, Ethylparaben
Film FormingHydrolyzed Wheat Protein/PVP Crosspolymer, Acrylates Copolymer, Polyquaternium-51, Soluble Collagen
CleansingDisodium Stearoyl Glutamate
AstringentLycium barbarum Fruit Extract
AntioxidantLycium barbarum Fruit Extract, Vitamin E*, Vitamin C**
OpacifyingAluminum Hydroxide
BufferCitric Acid, Urea
* As Tocopherol.

** As Ascorbyl Palmitate.

*** As Panthenol.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your face.
  • A dime-sized amount should suffice. You can apply using your fingers or a sponge.
  • Use a makeup remover to take it off.

What I Liked

 SPF 18.

 Light and buildable.

 Silky finish.

 Light to medium coverage.

 Evens out your skin tone.

Chlorphenesin can clean your skin and stop odor by resisting microbial growth.

What I Didn’t Like

The coverage may not suffice if you have an issue like melasma.

You may need to use primer to deal with pores and/or wrinkles.

SPF 18 won’t suffice for sustained sun exposure.

The Best Powder Foundation For Dry Skin

04. Clinique Superpowder Double Face Makeup for Dry Combination Review

It includes Titanium Dioxide so you may face ‘flashback’ if you’re in a flash photograph.

If you think there’s a chance of flash pics, use a setting powder that doesn’t contain silica.

It has no strong scent and should not set off irritation making it a good fit for users with sensitive skin.

The coverage is light to medium, but it does a great job of complementing your natural skin.

It’s quite light on your face so you can easily build coverage.

The finish is more matte than dewy. However the foundation includes a number of moisturizers and will not dry out your skin.

You should not face any problems with caking or flaking.

Coming to the shades, you may find the actual product to be slightly lighter in color than advertised.

The following are the chief ingredients.

Slip ModifierTalc, Methicone
EmollientIsostearyl Linoleate, Octyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Hydrogenated Lecithin, Methicone
OpacifyingTitanium Dioxide, Alumina
Viscosity ControllingOctyldodecyl Stearoyl Stearate, Trimyristin, Alumina
AntioxidantVitamin E*
Skin ConditioningVitamin E*, Trimyristin
EmulsifierHydrogenated Lecithin
Suspending AgentHydrogenated Lecithin
SolventTrimyristin
AbsorbentAlumina
Chelating AgentTetrasodium EDTA
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Potassium Sorbate
* As Tocopherol.

Directions

  • Wash and dry your face.
  • Apply the base coat with the sponge provided.
  • If any area requires special attention use your fingers to apply extra foundation. Best done in circular sweeps.
  • Use a makeup remover to wash it off.

What I Liked

No strong scent; good for sensitive skin.

Complements your natural skin.

Lightweight and buildable.

Matte finish.

Should not dry your skin.

What I Didn’t Like

Use a non-silica concealer to avoid ‘flashback’.

Actual shades may be a trifle lighter than those advertised.

The Best Foundation For Mature Dry Skin

05. Shimarz Fair Liquid Mineral Foundation Review

The best thing about this is the almost all-natural composition with generally safe and benign ingredients like Aloe Vera and Shea Butter.

Though there are only six shades to choose from, I think they’ve done a pretty good job of selecting the shades.

Most people (whether with dark or pale skin) have a good shot at getting a matching shade.

If you have pronounced wrinkles or large pores you may face a problem with the product settling in and amplifying them.

In such a case you may be well-advised to use a primer as a base for the foundation.

It will give you light to medium coverage with a semi-matte finish. It is great at complementing your natural looks.

It may fall a bit short in concealing your red spots or pimples but that’s a trade-off for its high organic content.

The usual suspects – melting, caking and fading – should not bother you too much.

It does however have a noticeable scent.

The main ingredients are listed below.

Active Ingredient (SPF) – Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide.

Skin ConditioningAloe Vera* Leaf Juice, Chamomile Hydrosol**, Shea Butter, Rice (Oryza sativa) Extract, Vitamin E***, Grapefruit (Citrus grandis) Peel Extract, Japanese Honeysuckle
AntioxidantAloe Vera* Leaf Juice, Shea Butter, Vitamin E***, Japanese Honeysuckle
SolventWater/Aqua
Viscosity ControllingShea Butter, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate
EmulsifierStearic Acid, Lecithin
CleansingStearic Acid
EmollientStearic Acid, Lecithin, Squalane
Slip ModifyingBoron Nitride
OpacifyingBoron Nitride
Film FormingCarnauba Wax, Glyceryl Polymethacrylate
Aloe barbadensis.

** A hydrosol, also known as ‘floral water’ is a suspension of the various components obtained by distilling a flower.

*** As Tocopherol Acetate.

Directions

  • Wash and dry your face.
  • Take 1 or 2 pumps of the foundation on your finger and spread over your face in dots (like stipplig).
  • Use a sponge or brush to even it out.
  • Use a good cleanser or makeup remover to wash it off.

What I Liked

 SPF 15.

 Almost entirely natural ingredients.

 Lightweight and buildable.

Strategically chosen shades. Most people should find a suitable color.

Semi-matte finish and good at complementing your natural looks.

You should not face any melting, flaking or fading.

What I Didn’t Like

The coverage may be a little light.

May settle in your lines, wrinkles and so on.

 Has a noticeable scent.

The Best Foundation For Dry Sensitive Skin

06. Maybelline New York Fit Me! Foundation Review

The best thing about this is that it’s available in 23 different shades so you have a pretty good chance of getting a shade that’s suitable for your skin.

I would say for someone with dry skin this foundation offers one of the best finishes. You will get a nice dewy finish with a nice sheen, but not sloppy or overwhelmingly oily.

It doesn’t grip your skin tightly and has a lot of scope for building coverage.

Pores are a bit of a bother. You may find it settling into your pores.

If you anticipate problems with settling in apply a primer base before applying the foundation.

While melting or caking should not manifest you may face some fading within 3-4 hours of application.

I can only suggest you carry it with you so you can touch up if it does fade.

As far as the price is concerned, it’s definitely at the lower end of the range. In fact I’d say it falls in the ‘drugstore’ category.

In addition to preserving the foundation, Chlorphenesin is a good biocide which means it helps clean your skin and stop odor by resisting microbial growth.

The key ingredients are charted below.

Active Ingredient (SPF) – 7% Octinoxate/Octyl Methoxycinnamate.

  • Pour some foundation on the back of your hand and use a sponge or brush to apply across your face.
  • If specific areas (like red spots) need extra attention use your fingers to apply additional foundation there.
  • Use a makeup remover to wash it off.

What I Liked

It feels light and silky on the skin.

 Light smooth texture.

Not heavy on the skin; easily buildable.

 No melting or caking.

 Nice dewy finish.

At the lower end of the price range; definitely in the drugstore category.

What I Didn’t Like

Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone may sensitize your skin.

Apply a primer base if you anticipate problems with your pores.

Absolutely not for oily skin types.

May start to fade 3-4 hours after application.

The Best Foundation For Dry Acne Prone Skin

07. Almay Truly Lasting Color (TLC) Liquid Makeup Review

You will love putting this on. It feels fresh and light on the skin; it doesn’t sit tightly on and suffocate your skin.

The coverage is not bad, medium I’d say. Given how lightweight it is you can easily build.

You could also experiment combining it with a good moisturizing lotion to increase coverage. That will also give you a more dewy finish.

Speaking of, moisturizing may be a tiny bit of a problem. I’d suggest you combine Almay TLC with a moisturizer if you have dry skin.

On the other hand this does not trigger allergic reactions and is eminently suitable for sensitive skin.

Melting may be an issue only if you have oily skin.

Otherwise, be cool. No melting, fading or caking, making this a very good all day foundation for dry skin.

A bit of trivia: Both Phenyl Trimethicone and Dimethicone are used to condition your skin. Phenyl Trimethicone is better than Dimethicone for dry skin due to its higher viscosity.

Listed below are the main ingredients.

SolventWater/Aqua, Cyclopentasiloxane, Cyclohexasiloxane, Butylene Glycol
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Cyclohexasiloxane, PEG/PPG - 18/18 Dimethicone, Sweet Almond* Seed Extract, Kelp** Extract, Trihydroxystearin, Methicone, Tribehenin, Hydrogenated Lecithin

The Best Liquid Foundation For Dry Skin

08. Revlon ColorStay Makeup For Normal/Dry Skin Review

If I had to point to one pro of Revlon’s ColorStay foundation line it would definitely be staying power.

You can apply this in the morning, go about your routine, even go on a date or something and it would still be on your face when you’re preparing to retire for the night.

It should even withstand the laughter challenge – no laugh lines or cracks.

Coverage is light to medium but you can easily build.

In addition to that the finish is just right. Adds a nice quiet glaze to your skin, nothing too flashy.

It’s available in 15 different shades. However they are on average lighter than advertized.

So you should consider choosing a shade darker than the one you think is suitable for you.

The only thing you need to look out for is that it’s a bit runny so you need to be careful while applying it.

This is priced extremely reasonably making it one of the most affordable foundations for dry skin.

Bisabolol can brighten your skin.

Salicylic Acid is known for its keratolytic property which means it can remove warts, calluses etc.

The Best Cream Foundation For Dry Skin

09. COVERGIRL and Olay Tone Rehab 2-In-1 Foundation Review

Applying this is a treat. It blends in easily and actually feels very moisturizing on your skin.

In fact, if your skin isn’t that dry, you may not need to apply moisturizer separately.

It doesn’t sit very heavily on the skin – and perhaps you can guess this by now – and is eminently buildable.

Coverage is on the fuller side. One coat will go a long idea towards concealing blemishes. I don’t think you will need concealer.

It doesn’t settle into pores or wrinkles.

However you may need to carry it around to touch yourself up if you plan to wear this for the whole day.

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) is very useful for resisting environmental stress on the skin. It can also smoothen skin, in particular if you happen to have large pores.

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 has been shown to have a prominent anti-wrinkling effect.

The chart below features the key ingredients.

SolventCyclopentasiloxane, Water/Aqua, Benzyl Alcohol
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Diethylhexyl Carbonate, PEG/PPG - 18/18 Dimethicone, Methicone, Aluminum Hydroxide

**** Camellia sinensis.

Directions

  • Clean and dry your face.
  • Dot your face with the foundation.
  • Blend it in using a brush or a sponge.
  • Use a good makeup cleanser to remove.

What I Liked

 Moisturizing on the skin.

 Lightweight and buildable.

Good coverage; you should not need concealer.

 Doesn’t settle into your pores.

What I Didn’t Like

You may need to touch it up if you plan on wearing it for a long time.

The Best Light Foundation For Dry Skin

10. NARS Sheer Glow Foundation Review

Celebrity makeup artists Allan Avendaño and Vincent Oquendo (who can boast of clients like the Hadid sisters, Suki Waterhouse and Sarah Hyland) swear by NARS Sheer Glow Foundation, I swear.

The foundation is nice and smooth. Lies on your skin like a dream and you can build to your heart’s content.

The coverage is medium to full, without being oily or shining like a mirror. You get a nice semi-matte finish, and, no, I don’t think it will accentuate your pores.

The only melting that happens is when it melts into your skin when you apply it. You should not face melting or fading while you’re wearing it, within reasonable periods of time.

One thing I don’t like about this is that it doesn’t come with a pump. You can purchase one separately which is a buzzkill.

Another thing about this is I would recommend it only for special occasions like a party or something. I think the finish is too garish for everyday situations.

You can check out the key ingredients from the following chart.

SolventWater, Cyclopentasiloxane, Butylene Glycol
EmollientCyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, Triethylhexanoin
HumectantButylene Glycol, Glycerin
Viscosity ControllingButylene Glycol, Dimethicone/Vinyl Dimethicone Crosspolymer, Disteardimonium Hectorite
OpacifyingPolymethylsilsesquioxane
Skin ProtectantDimethicone
Anti-foamingDimethicone, Polysilicone-2
Skin ConditioningPEG-10 Dimethicone, Glucosyl Hesperedin, Vitamin E*
Suspending AgentDisteardimonium Hectorite
EmulsifierSorbitan Sesquiisostearate, Triethoxycaprylylsilane
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Sodium Dehydroacetate
Binding AgentTriethoxycaprylylsilane
AntioxidantTurmeric (Curcuma longa) Powder, Glucosyl Hesperedin, Ascorbyl Glucoside, Vitamin E*
* As Tocopherol.

Directions

  • Wash and dry your face.
  • If you want, apply primer.
  • Take the NARS Sheer Glow foundation on the back of your palm.
  • Use a sponge or your fingers to apply the foundation to your face.
  • Remove using a good exfoliating cleanser (there is the teensiest chance it may clog your pores).

What I Liked

Smooth and light on the skin.

 Very buildable.

 Medium to high coverage.

 No melting or fading.

 Semi-matte finish.

What I Didn’t Like

 Doesn’t come with a pump.

The finish is somewhat garish for everyday situations; you may save this for special events.

You should use a good exfoliating cleanser to remove.

Shade is an important criterion. A foundation is supposed to even out skin tone, cover blemishes and give you a matte or dewy look.

In general a foundation that is too garish is not ideal.

Apart from that the choice of shade is completely unique to the user and there is no general ‘good shade’ or ‘bad shade’.

Coverage is another important criterion. Is your foundation

  • Sheer Cover meaning its pigment content is between 8% to 13%.
  • Light Cover implying pigment content between 13% to 18%.
  • Medium Cover covers foundations with 18% to 23% pigment content.
  • Full Cover are those foundations which have pigment content up to 35%. In certain cases it may go up to 50%.

There are some practical aspects like whether the foundation melts, cakes, fades and so on.

Moisturizers (Humectants, Emollients and other Skin Conditioners) are necessary to keep your skin soft and supple.

Opacifying Agents help reduce the visibility of blemishes.

For the purpose of making and maintaining the foundation the ingredients need to have certain properties like

Suspenders to stop particles from falling out of solution.

Emulsifiers to form and stabilize emulsions which are mixtures of normally immiscible liquids.

Binders to help other ingredients bind to your skin.

Absorbents to soak up stray liquids.

And so on.

Speaking very, very strictly, there are differences between a foundation and a BB Cream or a Concealer.

If you’re inquisitive about that, ask and thou shalt be answered!

Which is the best base for dry skin?

First, if you don’t know what a ‘base’ is

A base is a product typically applied before the foundation, to make makeup look more appealing and sometimes help makeup last longer.

Foundation on the other hand provides even coverage. Of course these are not set in stone and some foundations can help makeup last longer as well.

If you have dry skin, I’d suggest you try out the Magic Perfecting Base from L’Oréal Paris.

While I can certainly help you select a good foundation 50% of the success lies in application.

You can either buff (sweep in small circles) or stipple (dab in small spots) it.

Each has its own features. Choose wisely.

By now you know enough to understand which foundation is good for dry skin but I think I can help you a bit more.

I think even among the top 10 foundations for dry skin (which are all winners in their own right) there is a clear first choice you should check out.

L’Oréal Paris Infallible Pro-Glow Foundation

I would say its light feel on your skin and it not caking, burning or fading too much even after a long wear is what clinched its vote as the best brand foundation for dry skin.

If we were to go by the different features of a foundation – weight on the skin, coverage, staying power, range of shades and so on – we’d probably get separate winners in each category.

Its finish and buildability are quite good.

It includes dedicated antioxidants to resist oxidizing while it’s on your skin. If a foundation does oxidize while on your skin, it may give your skin a dark tint, which this foundation avoids.

Coming to the core issue of dry skin, this foundation includes lots of lubricating agents to keep your skin moisturized.

If you absolutely want something glamorous for a party or something I’d recommend NARS Sheer Glow Foundation.

It gives you a very showy finish without becoming too shiny or oily.

If your twin overriding concerns are keeping dry skin moisturized and coverage, I’d recommend theBalm BalmShelter Tinted Moisturizer SPF 18.

What makes it the best coverage foundation for dry skin?

The fact that it’s a moisturizer ought to make it good for dry skin (well, duh!).

It provides a rich tint and an extensive coverage, as noted by Elle.

It’s also quite mild on the skin making it the best full coverage foundation for sensitive skin.

That’s about it.

If you think you know a foundation that’s better for dry skin than the ones I’ve listed, please tell me!
