Who doesn’t want to experience the Andie Macdowell-Hugh Grant standing in the rain scene in Four Weddings and a Funeral?

Well, in order to do that you need some things.

Of course, you need a boyfriend (or a girlfriend).

AND…and this is the thing you’re likely to forget….you need a good waterproof eyeliner.

USP: Cara Delevingne’s make-up artist Molly Stern lists the cobalt shade of this exact line as the key to getting the Cara Delevingne 2016 Comic Con Cobalt Eyes Look.

Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer is a well-known industry standard waterproofing agent.

This is a good choice for official and semi-official settings. Like a pencil liner it’s very easy to apply. However you don’t face the hassle of having to sharpen it.

You can also use this for informal settings where you’d want more defined lines and perhaps styles like cat eyes. However that will take a little effort.

In particular, this is a great option for monolid users.

It will last longer if you apply some primer first.

The key ingredients follow.

Film FormerStyrene/Acrylates Copolymer, Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer
Texture EnhancerButylene Glycol, Xantham Gum
ThickenerBeheneth-30, Xantham Gum
Condition your skinSodium Polyaspartate
MoisturizerAlcohol
pH adjuster/BufferSodium Hydroxide
PreservativePhenoxyethanol, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Sodium Dehydroacetate
Chelating AgentDisodium EDTA

Directions

  • Smooth the eye out before lining. That ensures it doesn’t hurt.
  • Apply the liner close to your lashes.
  • Use small feathering strokes to avoid gaps between the line and your lash line.
  • Remove with a good cleanser or coconut oil.

What did I look for in selecting Waterproof Eyeliners??

Well, first and foremost I looked at the shades.

Then I looked at the kind of eyeliner.

  • A pencil or a pen eyeliner may flake and/or smudge after a long wear but it’s also the easiest to apply.
  • A felt-tipped eyeliner may be a bit more difficult to apply depending on how tough the tip is.
  • A brush-tipped eyeliner is easier to apply than a felt-tipped eyeliner.

And then of course come the properties of the ingredients.

Ingredients that are moisturizers, replenish or soothe your skin are there to protect your skin from dryness and keep it lustrous.

Film Formers have water-binding properties and smoothen your skin.

Texture Enhancersare used to turn basic pigments into finished products.

Ethanolamines, used as surfactants and/or buffers, are skin and eye irritants. Though permitted for use in certain concentrations and forms in the USA and the EU, it may be better to avoid ethanolamines.

Parabens have estrogen-mimicking properties so they’re better avoided. There is research suggesting they may not be that bad….but better safe than sorry!

Emulsion Stabilizers/Emulsifying Agents stop emulsions from separating into their oil and liquid components.

Binding Agents hold or draw other chemicals together mechanically, chemically or as an adhesive.

Chelating agents prevent contamination.

Preservatives…well, duh!

Water may be a surprising addition to eyeliners but it’s not. Some eyeliners contain humectants (moisturizers) which draw water to the skin surface. Having some water provided in the eyeliner itself stops the humectants (moisturizers) drawing water from deeper in the skin.

Buffer/pH adjusters resist pH changes. This ensures the eyeliner does not become too acidic or alkaline for your skin.

Well that was a looong list…

Yes it was….and as usual, I have a clear winning Waterproof Eyeliner for you.

stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner

It’s a felt-tip pen waterproof eyeliner, so easy to use.

Acrylates/Octylacrylamide Copolymer is a well-known industry standard waterproofing agent.

It won’t run, smudge or flake but it may fade a little…but, no biggie! Simply remove it with a cleanser, whip out your pencil and apply a fresh coat!

There are 14 gorgeous shades to choose from. Tell you what….

Do a basic smoky eye with one of the darker eyeliners and perhaps some eye shadow.

Glide the Periwinkle along your waterline.

And do a Winged Line with the Cobalt Blue.

And check the mirror.

Ten to one you’ll find Cara Delevingne’s Comic Con staring back at you.

Now…I’m not saying any of these waterproof eyeliners are in danger of drying out but if they do, here’s a quick primer on how to revive them.

One Final Word Of Warning

You’re sure gonna have fun with the waterproof eyeliner of your choice…but make sure to remember the Golden Rules

Some eyeliners may be flammable. So do NOT use them near fire or heat.

Avoid getting them into your eyes or scratching your eyes with them. You may go blind. If you do get your eyes scratched, consult an opthalmologist immediately.

Do NOT apply eye makeup in moving cars.

Do NOT share your eyeliner (or any other eye makeup) with anyone else.

Do NOT fall asleep with your eyeliner on.

  • Joel Schlessinger M.D. says that it can cause redness, dryness and irritation.
  • It may also clog your lash follicles, giving you eye pimples.

That’s about it. If you feel I’ve missed something…or your new Waterproof Eyeliner got you your first Four Weddings and a Funeral moment, feel free to tell me!
