Who doesn’t want to look like Aria Montgomery?

Well, in order to do that you need some things.

You’ll need your hair styled, you’ll need the perfect lipstick…and on and on.

AND…and this is the thing you’re likely to forget….you’ll need a good quality gel eyeliner.

Why gel eyeliner? Because those give you a lot of flexibility, build-ability (useful if you’re thinking of applying more than one layer) and blend-ability….provided you choose a good one.

And that’s where I come in. I reviewed the 20 hottest gel eyeliners available and came up with a list of the 5 best gel eyeliners.

At A Glance: My Choices For The Best Gel Eyeliner

Docolor Liquid Eyeliner Eye Liner Gel is great for cat eyes and wings.

2 in 1Black and Brown Gel Eyeliner Set doesn’t fade, flake or run much.

Maybelline New York Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner is extremely versatile.

Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Eye Liner doesn’t smudge, run, fade or flake much.

Bobbi Brown Long Wear Gel Eyeliner Duo has a great creamy clay texture.

The Best Cat Eyes Gel Eyeliner

01. Docolor Liquid Eyeliner Eye Liner Gel Review

USP: It is great for cat eyes and wings.

Shade: Black

Type of Liner: Felt-tipped pen.

Does not smudge or fade much. May run and flake a bit if you perspire or tear up.

The pen is very soft and the liner glides on in a smooth flourish.

It’s the perfect choice for quick touch-ups (even re-application if you need).

It’s very nicely pigmented and will give you a bold, deep line.

The color’s Just About Right – dark enough to highlight your eyes but not too dark to look cheap.

This is the perfect option to give yourself a cat eye design.

Both beginners and experts will appreciate it.

Directions

  • Use the liner to make small dots along the lash line.
  • Connect the dots in a line. Place your elbow on a table for stability.
  • Give it a minute to dry.
  • Use warm water or coconut oil to remove it.

What I Liked

Does not smudge or fade much.

Perfect for cat eyes and wings.

Soft and smooth pen.

Very easy to apply, touch up and re-apply.

The shade is excellent and will highlight your eyes perfectly.

Good for both beginners and veterans.

What I Didn’t Like

May run or flake.

Some users may think the shade isn’t deep enough.

The Best Non-Blooming Gel Eyeliner

02. 2 in 1Black and Brown Gel Eyeliner Set Review

USP: The two brushes make it easy to get perfect cat eyes and winged designs.

Shades: Black and Brown.

Type of Liner: Brush and Pot. 2 brushes – one regular liner + one angular liner.

May smudge after a long wear. Doesn’t flake, fade or run much.

It’s good for winged designs but may smear a bit, especially if you have oily skin. It’s also good for cat eyes.

If the liner dries up, add some oil to it and you’re good to go.

You can use it on your brows as well. Use the brown on your brows and the black on your lashes.

It gels really well (right there, see what I did?) with primer, foundation and eye shadow.

Directions

  • Dip the brush into the point and swirl it around till it’s saturated with liner.
  • Start at the inner corner of your eyes and proceed outwards.
  • Apply some coconut oil to a Q-Tip and use that to remove the liner.

What I Liked

Doesn’t fade, flake or run much.

 2 good shades available.

2 brushes – one straight and one angular – available.

Good for wings and cat eyes.

 Works on your brows.

Works well with primer, foundation and eye shadow.

Some users may find the brushes too small.

The Best Versatile Gel Eyeliner

03. Maybelline New York Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner Review

USP: The Maybelline Eye Studio Gel Eyeliner line features in Lisa Eldridge’s list of eyeliners she can’t live without.

Shades: Blackest Black, Brown, Charcoal and Eggplant.

Type of Liner: Brush and Pot.

Doesn’t smudge, flake or run. But it may start fading after a long wear.

What I liked best about it is its staying power. It can even survive a night of sleep.

Another thing I liked about it is its versatility. You can make the lines sharp or thick completely as per your discretion. And accordingly it’ll just give your eyes a fresh look for the workplace or highlight them for a night out.

The only problem is it’s a bit difficult to apply or touch up because you need your hands absolutely steady.

The Best Kohl Gel Eyeliner

04. Smashbox Always Sharp Waterproof Eye Liner Review

USP: It is self-sharpening and it has the beautiful kohl shade.

Shade: Rich Brown.

Type of Liner: Pencil.

Does not smudge, run, fade or flake much.

I really liked this shade. It’s a rich brown, suitable for highlighting your eyes and is even suitable for your brows. However it’s more suitable for informal settings.

You can safely apply this to your waterline. It may smudge a bit after some time but you can easily touch it up.

For its price, it’s greatly resistant to heat and moisture for not-too-long wears.

It is however a bit difficult to remove.

Following are the key ingredients.

Texture EnhancerIsododecane, Synthetic Wax, Polybutene
Condition your skinPentaerythrityl Stearate, Pentaerythrityl Tetraisostearate, Polyethylene, Perfluorononyl Dimethicone

  • Start at the inner corner of your eye and glide the pencil outwards.
  • To remove, wet a piece of cotton wool with your favourite cleanser and hold it on the liner for 10 seconds. Then just wipe it off.

What I Liked

Does not smudge, run, fade or flake under ordinary conditions.

Nice rich brown shade.

You can apply this at your waterline.

No ethanolamines.

Type of Liner: Brush and Pot.

Doesn’t smudge or run much. May fade and flake a bit after long wear.

What I liked about this liner is the creamy clay texture.

You may want to get an angular brush for great lining.

It doesn’t take a lot of product to get a good line so it really lasts.

You can use it on your waterline. It won’t smudge.

You can even use this as a kind of pomade to highlight your brows.

Listed below are the main ingredients.

 Doesn’t smudge or run much.

 2 shades in one buy.

 Great creamy clay texture.

 No ethanolamines.

 No parabens.

What I Didn’t Like

May fade or flake after a long wear.

What did I look for in selecting Gel Eyeliners?

Well, first and foremost I looked at the shades.

Then I looked at the kind of eyeliner.

  • A pencil or a pen eyeliner may flake and/or smudge after a long wear but it’s also the easiest to apply.
  • A felt-tipped eyeliner may be a bit more difficult to apply depending on how tough the tip is.
  • A brush-tipped eyeliner is easier to apply than a felt-tipped eyeliner.

And then of course come the properties of the ingredients.

Ingredients that are moisturizers, replenish or soothe your skin are there to protect your skin from dryness and keep it lustrous.

Texture Enhancersare used to turn basic pigments into finished products.

Ethanolamines, used as surfactants and/or buffers, are skin and eye irritants. Though permitted for use in certain concentrations and forms in the USA and the EU, it may be better to avoid ethanolamines.

Parabens have estrogen-mimicking properties so they’re better avoided. There is research suggesting they may not be that bad….but better safe than sorry!

Binding Agents hold or draw other chemicals together mechanically, chemically or as an adhesive.

Bulking Agents are non-reactive, solid ingredients that are used to dilute other solids, or to increase the volume of a product.

Slip Agents help other substances literally ‘slip’, flow more easily.

Preservatives…well, duh!

Well that was a looong list…

Yes it was….and as usual, I have a clear winning Gel Eyeliner for you.

Maybelline New York Eye Studio Lasting Drama Gel Eyeliner

It’s definitely on the higher end of the price spectrum but worth it!

It can stay on under most circumstances.

It’s versatile – equally suitable for both formal and informal engagements.

A single buy lasts for a long time and doesn’t dry up.

Now…I’m not saying any of these gel eyeliners are in danger of drying out but if they do, here’s a quick primer on how to revive them.

One Final Word Of Warning!

You’re sure gonna have fun with the gel eyeliner of your choice…but make sure to remember the Golden Rules

Some eyeliners may be flammable. So do NOT use them near fire or heat.

Avoid getting them into your eyes or scratching your eyes with them. You may go blind. If you do get your eyes scratched, consult an opthalmologist immediately.

Do NOT apply eye makeup in moving cars.

Do NOT share your eyeliner (or any other eye makeup) with anyone else.

Do NOT fall asleep with your eyeliner on.

  • Joel Schlessinger M.D. says that it can cause redness, dryness and irritation.
  • It may also clog your lash follicles, giving you eye pimples.

That’s about it. If you feel I’ve missed something…or your new Gel Eyeliner got you your first Aria Montgomery compliment, feel free to tell me!
