01. Roc Max Resurfacing Anti-Aging Facial Cleanser Review

Well, this is a little more of a scrub than a cleanser but it does get the job of cleansing your skin done well.

There’s always a balance being struck between scrubbing and being mild on the skin; we’d say this is tilted towards being mild on your skin. So if you’re got sensitive skin or already have breakouts this may be the way to go!

Exfoliating beads help slough dead skin cells and hair follicles off of your face, preventing their build-up. This is important to stop pores from being clogged which can lead to wide pores and breakouts.

It includes surfactants which can reduce the surface tension of oils. Excess oils and sebum on your skin will thus mix with water and get washed away.

It will make your skin smooth and supple.

However this is accomplished in part by forming a thin film on your skin that some users may not like.

Lactic Acid, in addition to exfoliating and maintaining pH, can also correct uneven skin tone and generally brighten your skin.

Moreover, it’s a lot, lot less irritating than most AHA’s (yeah, L.A. is an alpha-hydroxy acid), so much so you can use it even if you’ve got problems like rosacea.

The key ingredients are listed below.

What I Liked

Good at exfoliation.

Over time you may see an improvement in skin tone.

Mild on the skin; useful for people whose skin is sensitive.

What I Didn’t Like

It has a not-too-mild fragrance that may put off some users.

You may feel a fine film on your skin.

02. TruSkin Naturals BEST Vitamin C Daily Facial Cleanser Review

You should enjoy applying this creamy cleanser. It foams well and is refreshing on the skin.

As far as cleansing is concerned, this one is very good. Dirt and excess oil should easily be cleared away.

With time it can improve skin tone. In the short term itself you should notice your face feeling fresh and gaining a glow (not an oily shine but a gentle glow).

It should stimulate collagen production, keeping your skin taut which is a key aim of any anti-aging regimen.

Vitamin C (as Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate) is an antioxidant…and so much more.

As an added bonus, Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate is one of the mildest derivatives of Ascorbic Acid/Vitamin C.

Tea Tree Oil is good at clearing acne; however it can be sensitizing. So can Oregano. That’s a little bit of a concern however the benefits they offer are considerable.

However, to be on the safe side, do a patch test before adopting it as your regular cleanser.

Moreover, if you have dry skin you should moisturize right after using this cleanser.

It may trigger a ‘purge’ (an initial breakout) when you first start using it; however discontinue using it if the breakouts persist more than a fortnight.

This product includes an interesting ingredient, an amino acid called L-Arginine aka (2s)-2-amino-5-guanidinopentanoic acid.

Its main uses are to improve skin healing and promote hair growth. Research suggests it can also slow down aging of the skin.

The key ingredients are listed below.

What I Liked

Good at cleansing oil and dirt off of your face.

 Improves skin tone over time.

Imparts a gentle glow to your skin.

 Should stimulate collagen production.

Makes your skin feel smooth and supple.

What I Didn’t Like

It may cause a ‘purge’ when you first start using it.

You may need to moisturize after using this cleanser.

You should use an exfoliant along with this because it lacks a dedicated exfoliant like Salicylic Acid.

03. Amara Organics Facial Cleanser with 15% Vitamin C Review

As far as cleansing goes, I’d say this one is definitely a great catch. It does a great job of removing dirt and gunk from your skin.

Coming to oils, it’s effective for them as well however it may be a bit excessive, that is, it may strip oils off of your skin excessively. However using a moisturizer takes care of that.

It’s also a good one for removing makeup. However if you’ve got eye makeup on, be careful because it does sting if it leaks into the eyes.

On the aspect of aging, it’s quite good also. It should help maintain skin tone and fade spots. On wrinkles however the results may vary from user to user.

It includes Vitamin C in the form of Sodium Ascorbyl Phosphate (SAP).

That is significant because SAP is one of the mildest forms of Vitamin C so it will not sensitize your skin at all. It’s also very stable and does not break down easily.

SAP/Vitamin C protects your skin from oxidative and environmental stress, resists wrinkling and maintains skin tone.

This product includes an interesting ingredient, an amino acid called L-Arginine aka (2s)-2-Amino-5-guanidinopentanoic acid.

Its main uses are to improve skin healing and promote hair growth. Research suggests it can also slow down aging of the skin.

Good at removing oils however some users may find it removes oils excessively. Use a moisturizer in such a case.

 Good at removing makeup.

Quite good at resisting most aspects of aging.

What I Didn’t Like

You may consider using a separate exfoliant.

Its effectiveness at reducing and resisting wrinkles may vary between users.

Can sting your eyes so be careful if you’re removing eye makeup.

04. L’Oreal Paris RevitaLift Radiant Smoothing Facial Cream Cleanser Review

This offering from L’Oreal has a very enjoyable creamy texture that develops into a silky lather you should feel nice just applying.

Coming to cleanser, it’s very good at cleansing dirt, excess oils and gunk off of your skin. And all that, we feel, without stripping your skin of oils and moisture excessively.

Makeup will also be removed in due course if you use this cleanser, including eye makeup. However it does sting the eyes, so be careful when removing eye makeup.

It includes Salicylic Acid and should be a reasonably good exfoliant.

It includes volatile compounds such as linalool for fragrance which is not too relevant to a cleanser. It may not cause any problem but if you do have sensitive skin, better be careful.

As for aging, it will help you resist oxidative stress, smoothen wrinkles and fade spots.

It contains Vitamin C in the form of Ascorbyl Glucoside. While this is an excellent antioxidant it may not be able to improve skin tone as well as some other derivatives of Vitamin C.

Benzyl Salicylate is not a sunscreen. It protects the cleanser from degradation upon exposure to sunlight in addition to enhancing the fragrance.

However, some research suggests that it may have a negative effect on the skin.

The key ingredients are listed below.

Does not strip oils and moisture excessively off of your skin.

Reasonably good at exfoliating.

Cleans makeup including eye makeup.

Helps resist oxidative stress, smoothens wrinkles and spots. Good anti-aging option.

What I Didn’t Like

May trigger some reaction if you have sensitive skin; if it does stop using it.

Be careful applying it around the eyes because it does sting your eyes.

05. Anti Aging Cleanser by Derma-nu Natural Face Wash Facial Cleanser for Women Review

First things first, this cleanser has no added fragrance. But it does have a natural herbal scent that we really liked. And no, it shouldn’t sensitize you like volatile fragrances do.

Cleanser-wise this one definitely hits the mark and then some. It will get rid of dirt, excess oil and gunk without stripping the skin of all oils.

Your skin should feel soft and comfortable after a cleanse.

While it lacks a dedicated exfoliant to the best of our knowledge, it does have an antimicrobial (Wildcrafted Oregon Grapes) and lots of antioxidants which should render your skin extremely hostile to acne growth.

On the aspect of makeup as well it’s very good at removal. There should be no residue remaining once you’re done cleansing with it. While we think it doesn’t sting the eye as much as others, be careful all the same and try to stop it from getting into your eyes.

Coming to the anti-aging bit, again, this cleanser from Derma-nu romps home. It resists oxidative damage, softens wrinkles, fades spots and should also improve skin tone over time.

Carrageenan is a gum that, in addition to thickening the cleanser, has water-binding properties.

All the cleansers, indeed almost all the ingredients, in our opinion, are carefully chosen and are mild on the skin while doing their jobs well.

What should you look for to select the best anti aging cleanser?

There are two aspects. One is the cleansing, the other is the anti-aging.

In cleansing you should review:

  • How well the cleanser does the basic cleanse of dirt, oil and gunk from your face.
  • Whether it strips oil and moisture excessively from your face.
  • Brownie points if it exfoliates.
  • Does it remove makeup.

Then comes aging:

  • Does it suppress oxidative stress? In other words does it have good antioxidants?
  • Can it resist environmental damage?
  • Can it smoothen wrinkles, fade spots and so on?
  • Sun damage is another part of anti-aging but we think you should not depend on a cleanser for sun protection (use a Broad Spectrum SPF Sunscreen) so we didn’t examine that here.
  • Brownie points if it can help stimulate collagen production. Collagen is a protein which helps keep skin supple. As we grow older collagen production reduces, making out skin sag.

OK, what do you want your anti aging cleanser to do?

Cleansers are the key cleansing ingredient(s). They can be mild or abrasive. You need to choose as per your skin type.

Antioxidants resist oxidization, reducing environmental stress, delay the onset of wrinkles. Many antioxidants encourage collagen production.

Buffers stop the product from turning too acidic or alkaline. Our skin has a pH of around 5.5. If the product pH varies too much from that it can cause discomfort.

Opacifying ingredients make large pores less conspicuous which is critical for a quick touch-up.

Skin Conditioners stop moisture and oils from being excessively stripped off of your face. Emollients and Humectants are both categories of skin conditioners.

Some substances refuse to mix with some solvents. Then they have to be emulsified, exist as tiny droplets in the solvent. This is done by emulsifiers.

Absorbent ingredients can soak up excess oils and gunk from your skin surface and pores.

Biocides kill microorganisms which would be critical because bacteria tend to grow in clogged pores.

Right, we’ve armed you with a lot of into but we think we can do you one better.

Allow us to reveal which cleanser we think is the absolute yuuuge top anti-aging cleanser amongst out picks.

Anti Aging Cleanser by Derma-nu Natural Face Wash Facial Cleanser for Women

One, its natural and derived from natural sources ingredients are all mild on the skin and there’s very little chance of sensitization.

Two, it is a good cleanser but not harshly drying. Note in the review we didn’t say ‘moisturize if you feel your skin becoming dry’ because we’re quite sure it won’t! (On the absolute off-chance it does, though, don’t panic; just moisturize after cleansing.)

Three, it has a delightful herbal fragrance that you should like without getting sensitized.

Four, it has an antimicrobial to tackle acne growth.

Five, it does a pretty good job of smoothening wrinkles, fading spots and so on.

That’s it.

If you feel there’s an anti-aging cleanser that we’ve missed, tell us in the comments. Good suggestions may get a shout-out on Twitter and/or Facebook!
